Welcome to Girls Inc. who became one of the newest members of MMP in 2009. In a few short months they have assembled a group of 12 volunteer mentors (including a group from University of Memphis women’s tennis team) with another group set to begin training soon.
GIMS (Girls Inc. Memphis Sisterhood) is a site-based and community-based mentoring program serving girls aged 6 to 18 who are participants in Girls Inc. programs at the four centers throughout the city. In addition to mentoring, Girls Inc. provides a wide variety of opportunities for young women to develop leadership, self-defense, and academic skills in the sciences, mathematics, and applied technology. Career and college exploration and pregnancy prevention are also components of the Girls Inc. array of curriculum based programs.
Volunteers can become “Sisters for Life” in the mentoring program with a nine-month commitment, and girls and volunteer mentors not yet matched participate in the “Sisters for a Day” program for special events and outings.
Kudos to Volunteer and Mentoring Director Desireé Robertson for her active participation in MMP and her leadership in this new Girls Inc. endeavor. Call her at 901-523-0217, ext. 201, or email email@example.com for more information.Share
