In January 2011, the Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation will launch a pilot TEAM mentoring program with two public charter schools, Power Center Academy and Freedom Preparatory Academy.

An orientation at each school took place November 9 at their respective sites. The Grizzlies Foundation staff welcomed new mentees and their families to the program with refreshments and an assortment of Grizzlies memorabilia for drawings and prizes.

“Both teams, the Freedom Team and Power Team, are visibly enthusiastic about having the Grizzlies support behind this program,” observed Eric Bleier, Coordinator of the Grizzlies Foundation. “The schools and their students can only benefit from this partnership and the breadth of resources offered by the Grizzlies.”

Participating parents made their appreciation and anticipation evident at each Tip-Off event, and many voiced their support of the Grizzlies Foundation’s program at both Freedom Prep and Power Center Academy.

Grizzlies TEAM Mentoring will allow the Grizzlies Foundation and its partners to reach more youth, engage more volunteers, and foster retention among those volunteers. Freedom Prep and Power Center were selected to participate in the pilot program. Both sites will match teams of three (3) mentors to groups of nine (9) students.
“I’m feeling very excited. To witness everyone smiling about the program was good to see,” says N’Seeka MacPherson , Freedom Prep’s Systems Coordinator and Grizzlies TEAM Mentoring site coordinator. “I’m really looking forward to seeing the transformation of our students from point A to point B with the help of the Grizzlies Foundation.”

The first sessions will take place the week of January 17, 2011. Prior to the start date, the Grizzlies Foundation will be hosting mentor training sessions with the volunteers to get them excited and prepared to start the program.
