Mentor Monday profile
Story by Joel Katz
The Memphis Grizzlies Charitable Foundation was proud to honor David Hamilton as the January 31st Mentor Monday honoree. David has been mentoring with Youth Villages for the past 2 years and has been with his current mentee for the past year.
Initially, David intended to become a foster parent. The training process at Youth Villages inspired him to become a mentor. “I thought I would mentor some of the teens first, prior to becoming a foster parent to better prepare myself.”
David is also a very active volunteer with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Memphis and has been a Big Brother to a 10-year old boy for the past 4 years. He notes, “I thought that it would be good to get mentoring experience with teenagers, this was another reason I sought out Youth Villages.” With his training and mentoring experience, David is surely taking the necessary steps to becoming a great foster parent.
Like most people who volunteer as mentors, David enjoys every moment he shares with his young friends. “I really enjoy mentoring and just knowing that I am helping a child or teen develop into a responsible adult. This is the greatest reward. Being a mentor also keeps me very active and gets me out of the house!”
As he has also found out, mentors are often offered free tickets to local attractions and events. “Many of the mentoring organizations get offered free tickets to various events in Memphis, so being a mentor is a great way to experience all of the wonderful things that the city has to offer.”
Engaging in a mentoring relationship is an experience that will leave each participant—whether the mentor or mentee—feeling better about themselves. David is a huge advocate and encourages “everyone get involved in mentoring. There are so many opportunities in Memphis. Whether you work with a child, a family member or even a co-worker, there are a lot of people out there who would appreciate some help, some advice and a friendly face.”
His mantra towards his service is simple and applicable to everyone, “I truly believe that all the good that we do today will be later rewarded.”
